The opening round of the U15s Girls County Championship saw the girls of the twin counties travelling north to Oxfordshire where they, along with the other counties in the group were hosted by Banbury RFC. This saw over 260 girls playing rugby throughout the day in the glorious autumn sunshine, supported by their enthusiastic families and friends.
The first matches of the day were played by our U15 and U18 girls who played Somerset simultaneously on neighbouring pitches. The U15’s game was played in good spirits and was an even contest for the majority of the match.
The Somerset side were first to score a try followed by a second seeing them go 10-0 up, however the girls worked hard and countered with a try of their own, which saw Maisy Allen crossing the line to give a score of 10-5 at halftime. The second half saw Somerset counter and move ahead with another try bringing the score to 15-5 before Maisy got her second. Dorset & Wilts were on the front foot but couldn’t capitalise on their chances. The girls were undeterred and kept motivated right up to the final whistle.
Each side showed excellent skills and commitment with Somerset making more of their chances to edge the match to a 15-10 result.
The coaches were immensely proud of all the girls for their fantastic team work and determination. They look forward to getting together with the squad ahead of the long trip to Camborne in Cornwall on Sunday 19th October for the game against Gloucestershire.
