Oakmeadians RFC Girls Academy launches September 2021

Oakmeadians RFC are proud to announce the launch of their new Girls Rugby Academy, a hub of quality training, coaching and performance for Girls Rugby in Bournemouth.

Come and join us for the official launch from 12.00pm on Sunday 12th September in Meyrick Park, Bournemouth.

The new Oakmeadians RFC Girls Academy is the first in the area and will help girls aged 10 to 18 to improve their rugby skills in a safe, enjoyable and stimulating environment. Girls Rugby is a fast growing section of Rugby Union, and the Academy will empower girls to reach their full potential whilst promoting physical and social development. Oakmeadians RFC promotes equality and inclusivity in rugby at all levels and ensures that all players can enjoy rugby in a safe environment where they can develop their sport, personal and social skills.

Academy Head Coach, Gordon Horsley said, “Over the years I have seen the interest from women and girls wanting to play rugby grow at an outstanding rate and by forming the Academy we want to take their experience to the next level”.

“All players will learn the essential skills required to play the game safely, they will develop new skills and ways to express themselves in a team environment. The safety and enjoyment of all players involved is very important to us and we encourage fun and healthy competition”

Academy players will be assisted, coached and guided by qualified coaches who hold a current DBS check. In addition guest coaches and professional players will be invited to deliver sessions at Meyrick Park, the home of Oakmeadians RFC.

The Academy is open to players of all capabilities and we look forward to welcoming anyone looking to develop their skills further.

The Academy will maintain the fun aspects of rugby which promotes the RFU’s core values: Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship. With ‘Enjoyment’ being considered a fundamental aspect of the training.

Oakmeadians RFC is glad to have the support of Brett Scott-Bader, Chair of Dorset & Wilts RFU, Women & Girls Rugby. Brett commented, “We are delighted to support this exciting opportunity to help develop girls in the game within a well-established local club, giving girls a consistent pathway to the senior game.”
